Description
The Transmission Lineman A / Journeyman Lineman performs skilled work in the construction, maintenance, and repair of high-voltage transmission lines and related structures. This role is responsible for executing field operations safely and efficiently while adhering to project specifications, company standards, and regulatory requirements. The Journeyman serves as a key field resource, providing technical expertise and supporting the development of apprentices and less experienced crew members.
What You'll Do
- Perform transmission line construction and maintenance including steel and wood structure erection, framing, and hardware installation.
- Install, sag, clip, and maintain conductors and associated transmission components.
- Perform rigging, hoisting, and equipment operation in support of transmission work activities.
- Work on energized or de-energized lines following all safety regulations, including minimum approach distances and proper PPE usage.
- Participate in daily job briefings, tailboards, and safety meetings to ensure safe work execution.
- Interpret blueprints, staking sheets, and engineering drawings to perform assigned tasks accurately.
- Inspect and maintain tools, equipment, and personal gear to ensure safe and reliable operation.
- Assist with grounding, bonding, and testing of transmission systems.
- Work closely with Foremen and crew members to maintain productivity and ensure work is completed on schedule.
- Identify and communicate jobsite hazards, risks, and potential safety improvements.
- Support material handling, jobsite setup, and logistical coordination as needed.
- Mentor and guide apprentices and junior crew members, contributing to their skill development and progression within the trade.
- Provide input on apprentice performance and progression to Foremen to support evaluations and career advancement decisions.
Requirements
- High school diploma or equivalent required.
- 4–6+ years of experience in transmission line construction and maintenance preferred.
- Demonstrated experience working on high-voltage systems (138kV–765kV preferred).
- Strong working knowledge of transmission construction methods including structure erection, conductor installation, and rigging practices.
- Ability to climb transmission structures and work at heights safely and confidently.
- Ability to read and interpret blueprints and engineering drawings.
- Commitment to safety and adherence to OSHA, company, and client standards.
- Ability to work effectively as part of a crew in physically demanding conditions.
- Willingness to travel or relocate based on project requirements.
