JOB SUMMARY

This position performs intermediate technical work in the construction, installation, maintenance, and repair of electrical transmission and distribution systems; does related work as required.  Work is performed under the regular supervision of the Line Crew Leader.  Supervision may be exercised over crew personnel.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS

• Installs, maintains, and repairs low and high voltage electric transmission and distribution systems.
• Analyzes and trouble shoots system to isolate faults and determine needed repairs on operating equipment.
• Operates aerial devices, digger derrick, cable tension equipment, and other equipment in connection with duties.
• Climbs poles, installs transformers, primary and secondary cables, conduits, cabinets, switches, connection boxes, and related materials.
• Performs required line work on energized and de-energized circuits.
• Works with general public, private contractors, developers, public service companies, and other utility companies.
• Reads, interprets, and inspects electric construction plans, specifications, and standards.
• Locates existing underground electric cables, natural gas lines, and connecting boxes.
• Repairs and replaces street lights and cable.
• Trims trees from lines. Backfills and tamps fill material. Installs MOT devices.
• Stocks truck with required materials, supplies, and tools.
• Follows safety rules and regulations and follows safe work practices.
• Serves on stand-by and works trouble calls as assigned.
• Serves as Line Crew Leader as assigned.
• Performs related tasks as required.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS

The work is heavy work requiring the exertion of 100 pounds of force occasionally, up to 50 pounds of force frequently, and up to 20 pounds of force constantly to move objects.  Additionally, the following physical abilities are required:

• Balancing: Maintaining body equilibrium to prevent falling while walking, standing, or crouching on narrow, slippery, or erratically moving surfaces. The amount of balancing exceeds that needed for ordinary locomotion and maintenance of body equilibrium.
• Climbing: Ascending or descending terrain, ladders, stairs, ramps, poles, and the like, using feet and legs and/or hands and arms. Body agility is emphasized.
• Crawling: Moving about on hands and knees or hands and feet.
• Crouching: Bending the body downward and forward by bending leg and spine.
• Feeling: Perceiving attributes of objects, such as size, shape, temperature, or texture by touching with skin, particularly that of fingertips.
• Grasping: Applying pressure to an object with the fingers and palm.
• Hearing: Required to receive detailed information through oral communications and/or to make fine distinctions in sound.
• Kneeling: Bending legs at knee to come to a rest on knee or knees.
• Manual Dexterity: Picking, pinching, or otherwise working, primarily with fingers rather than with the whole hand as in handling.
• Pulling: Using upper extremities to exert force in order to draw, haul, or tug objects in a sustained motion.
• Pushing: Using upper extremities to press against something with steady force in order to thrust forward, downward, or outward.
• Reaching: Extending hand(s) and arm(s) in any direction.
• Repetitive Motion: Substantial movements (motions) of the wrist, hands, and/or fingers.
• Standing: Particularly for sustained periods of time.
• Stooping: Bending body downward and forward by bending spine at the waist. Occurs to a considerable degree and requires full motion of the lower extremities and back muscles.
• Vocal Communication: Required for conveying detailed or important instructions to others accurately, loudly, or quickly.
• Visual Acuity: Required for visual inspection involving small defects and/or small parts, use of measuring devices, assembly or fabrication of parts at or within arm’s length, operation of machines, operation of motor vehicles or equipment, determining the accuracy and thoroughness of work, and observing general surroundings and activities.
• Walking: Moving about on foot to accomplish tasks, particularly for long distances or moving from one work site to another.

WORK ENVIRONMENT

Work is performed primarily outdoors under extreme weather and environmental conditions such as cold, heat, noise, vibration, hazards, atmospheric conditions, and exposure to oils, dust, dirt, fumes, and noises.

Requirements

Education and Experience:

High school diploma or equivalent and completion of a City-approved Apprentice Lineworker Program.

Special Qualifications:

CPR certification and a CDL driver's license valid in the State of Florida.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

• General knowledge of electric line construction, maintenance, and the hazards encountered.
• Ability to construct distribution lines, maintain transformers, cabinets, switches, install primary and secondary cable, and perform related work.
• Ability and strength to perform manual work along with physical stamina to withstand working under adverse weather conditions.
• Ability to follow oral directions and to observe safety rules and regulations.
• Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with associates.
