I. TITLE:
Lineperson
II. RATE OF PAY:
As per Bargaining Unit Agreement
III. REPORTS TO:
Director-Electrical Distribution
IV. RESPONSIBILITIES (not meant to be inclusive of all duties to be assigned):
This individual is responsible for performing skilled work in connection with the operation, maintenance, and construction of the Utility’s electric distribution system.
Ø Installs, maintains and repairs underground distribution and service lines.
Ø Repairs, maintains and installs power lines, street lighting, service connections, etc.
Ø Installs new transformers, air switches and reclosures.
Ø Climbs power poles to make inspections, installations and repairs in inclement weather.
Ø Assists in the construction of substations.
Ø Answers trouble calls.
Ø Assists in the training of Apprentice Lineworker.
Ø Performs other related work as assigned.
V. WORK SCHEDULE:
Ø Generally day shift
Ø May be asked to work extra shifts, call outs, or trouble call duty.
Ø Must be able to meet the reasonable response time as specified in the current AFSCME contract.
VI. MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
1. Educational-
§ High School graduate or equivalent required.
§ Successfully completed an approved “Electrical Line Workers” school and have had four years of Journeyman experience
Or
§ Have successfully completed an approved four-year apprenticeship course and two years experience as a Journeyman Lineworker
Or
§ Successfully completed the Virginia Minnesota Department of Public Utilities’ four-year apprenticeship program.
2. Knowledge and Experience-
§ Must have considerable knowledge of techniques, methods and practices of the electrical trade with emphasis on line work.
§ Knowledge of all relevant electrical codes.
§ Thorough knowledge of the hazards of the occupation.
§ Skill in locating and correcting defects in electrical systems, transformers, appliances, etc.
§ Thorough knowledge of standard tools, materials, methods and practices of the electrical trade.
3. Required Licenses, Certifications, Training
§ Must have a Class B driver’s license; subject to random drug and alcohol testing
§ Ability to drive and operate all required equipment.
4. Other
§ Ability to understand and carry out written and oral instructions.
§ Should be able to get along with individuals at all levels, both inside and outside the Department.
§ Must be able to deal with customers with unfailing courtesy and tact.
§ Must be able to perform the duties of the position.
§ It is desirable an individual be promotable to positions of higher responsibility.
VII. PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS are those necessary to successfully perform the essential functions of this job:
1. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to use hands to finger, handle, or feel objects, tools, or controls; reach with hands and arms; and talk or hear.
2. The employee occasionally is required to walk, sit, stand, stoop, kneel, crouch, balance, or crawl.
3. The employee is required to climb up to 50 feet.
4. The employee must be able to frequently lift and/or move up to 10 pounds and occasionally up to 40 pounds.
5. Specific vision abilities required by this job include distance vision, peripheral vision, and depth perception.
VIII. WORK ENVIRONMENT:
1. Must be able to work in elevated positions.
2. While performing the duties of this job, the employee frequently works near moving mechanical parts, in outside weather conditions, and is frequently exposed to extreme heat or extreme cold.
3. The employee is occasionally exposed to wet and/or humid conditions, fumes or airborne particles, and vibration.
4. The noise level is usually loud (traffic, equipment, etc.)
